Understanding Cosmetic Dentistry
In the world of cosmetic dentistry, fitting a gemstone (often called tooth jewelry) is a popular, non-invasive way to add a personalized sparkle to your smile. Unlike traditional piercings or tattoos, tooth gems do not require any drilling, injections, or permanent alteration of the tooth structure. These tiny ornaments—ranging from Swarovski crystals and diamonds to gold studs—are simply bonded to the surface of the enamel. This procedure is purely aesthetic and is favored by those looking for a temporary, reversible, and painless way to express their unique style.
How Tooth Gems Are Treated
The application process is quick, typically taking only 10 to 15 minutes, and follows a professional protocol similar to placing orthodontic brackets:
Cleaning & Preparation: The dentist first cleans the target tooth (usually a canine or lateral incisor) with a medical-grade polishing paste. A mild etching gel is then applied for a few seconds to microscopically roughen the surface, ensuring a strong bond.
Adhesive Application: A safe, dental-grade composite resin (the same material used for tooth-colored fillings) is applied to the prepared spot.
Gem Placement: The dentist carefully positions the gemstone into the resin using a specialized applicator tool.
Curing: A high-intensity LED curing light is used to harden the adhesive instantly, "locking" the gem in place.
Maintenance & Removal: While the gem can last anywhere from six months to two years, it is entirely reversible. If you decide to remove it, a dentist can safely "pop" it off and polish away any remaining resin, leaving your natural enamel smooth and undamaged.
